Human Technology Managerial Leadership (HTML)

SIM Utah is offering another session of its leadership/mentoring program for the fall of 2008. This leadership training is designed to help develop managerial leadership in Utah’s IT organizations. It is targeted for up and coming Information Technology management leaders, up to and including recently promoted CIO’s. It will be taught by experienced and successful CIO’s. All sessions will be conducted in Murray, Utah.

This is designed as a 4-month program with one 2 ½ hour training session each month starting in September. The cost of this program will be $150 for SIM members and $250 for non-members. The cost is simply to cover expenses for the program.

The focus of this training is on the “soft leadership skills”; not the technical aspects of the leadership job. Improving the participant’s EQ (Emotional Intelligence) in relationship to themselves, their leaders, peers and subordinates is the specific intent of this program. Recent studies show that a person’s business success is based more on their EQ than their IQ. Four leadership books will be part of the course sessions and each participated will be expected to read all the books and experiment with the concepts.

Each training session has a specific leadership relationship focus. The first session, currently scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th focuses on Leadership Relationships Technology. The October session focuses on Leadership Relationships Connections and Theory is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th. The November session, focused on Applications of Leadership Principles and Theory, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12th. The last session, focused on creating a Personal HTML Development Plan and program wrap-up, is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th.

Each session will be taught by experienced CIO’s and will consist of principles discovered in Human Technology and EQ. The sessions will also be highly interactive with real life relationship leadership examples. You will learn that HTML stands for more then just WEB technology. In the 30 days between sessions there will be reading and work assignments for you to complete. The CIO teachers will also be available for individual mentoring between class sessions.

Participants should be recommended by their CIO’s and/or recommended by a SIM Board member for attendance at this program. We expect this to be a GREAT program for improving managerial leadership and job performance and preparing leaders for more responsible leadership assignments. The program will be limited to 20 participants. If you have any questions call Debi Mofford at 801-243-8432 or Dave Berg at 801-403-9101.

The following are some quotes from the students who participated in the program and we hope they offer encouragement to attend the next session.

This was a great course. I really enjoyed the opportunity to get acquainted with other IT professionals in the area, as well as the encouragement to seek out someone new within my own organization and get to know them. For me, this lead to a new role which will make better use of my skills, and better opportunities in the future. The application of the concepts taught will help me in my career as well as in my personal life.

The instructors were great, and the books are very enlightening. Overall, this was a great course - I would highly recommend it.
- Ken Knapton, Group Dev Mgr, Operations, ICS -- LDS Church

The HTML training offered by the SIM Leadership Group was awesome! It is great to have some of the top business leaders in the IT industry give of their time and talents to mentor and assist leadership development. Concepts I learned both in the class and from studying the assigned books focused on skills that are foreign to other types of training technical leaders receive. The skills taught can be put into practice right away. Presentations made by the SIM Leadership Group were thought provoking and fun. If you have a chance to attend this training, do it! - Dan Dickson,Software Development Manager -- Browning

The SIM Utah HTML class was clearly one of the finest leadership training courses I have ever experienced. It focuses away from the technology maze in which we all too often become quagmired and distracted. It focuses instead upon the human elements of motivation, communication and mutual respect. If you're looking for a technology "silver bullet", this isn't it. But if you're serious about getting to the root of what's really going wrong in your IT shop and how to provide a catalyst for true change, this course will make a difference – Wayne Gelder – Questar Gas

The HTML class was extremely well thought out and executed. It has provided exceptional techniques and insight on how to improve business relationships and a way to communicate and more effectively lead our teams – Daniel Jimmie – Robert Half Technology, Inc.

I was invited to attend the first SIM Utah HTML class and can say that I am very happy that I was able to attend. It was very worthwhile and taught me a lot about how to manage and improve my professional relationships. I believe the teachings I gained from the HTML classes are invaluable to my effectiveness as a Chief Technology Officer at Browz. I highly recommend it. – Darwin Sass -- Browz

I highly recommend this course to any manager who immediately thinks of HyperText Markup Language when they read this course offering. It’s a sure sign of being a bit too technically oriented and not quite in touch with the human element of management, which is what this course is all about. This course provided me with a much needed refresher on the human elements of management in a highly technical world and provided great insight and motivation to build stronger relationships in the work place.Jim North, Senior Manager, Information Technology – NuSkin Enterprises

In the fast paced, frenzied environments that managers find themselves in today, the Human Technology Management Leadership training really hits the nail on the head. Participants quickly learn how to tap into the often overlooked and misunderstood underworld of relationship management. They will learn the skills needed to drive huge changes in their personal effectiveness as leaders. The effective combination of class time and offline reading provides participants a lasting methodology that a one day course will never be able to deliver. This training is a must-have for leaders serious about cultivating the best in themselves and the people they interact with. - Ryan Smith, Asst. VP, eBusiness - Intermountain Healthcare
